I’ve made a new round of updates to the free version of CommentLuv that will really help with anyone who is getting an invalid feed message.

Better Error Reporting

invalid-xml-warning

In the vast majority of cases where a user is seeing the ‘This XML document is invalid’ message when they comment on CommentLuv enabled blogs it is because of another plugin or theme action that is spitting out an error before your CommentLuv plugin has a chance to show the feed of your recent posts.

You can see in the image above, an error was caused by another plugin and that made the error show before the feed which makes the simplepie library fall over.

Now you are able to see the exact data that your site sent back and from that you should be able to see what is causing the error.

Author and Category URLs

category-url

Another great feature of v2.91 is you can now use author and category (and tag) specific URLs in the comment form of other CommentLuv enabled sites.

This means if you have a multi author blog, you can use a URL like http://comluv.com/author/admin/ and it will bring back posts just from the admin author.

It also means you can use categories too.

Let’s say you’re on a blog about code and among your categories that you write about on your post is a code category.

Now you can use a URL like http://fiddyp.co.uk/category/source-code/ to bring back the latest post in your source-code category

(btw.. you can also use tag URLs too like http://fiddyp.co.uk/tag/firefox/)

Thanks for the memories!

WordPress is getting bigger and plugins are using more and more resources but strangely, many hosting accounts still use the same antiquated memory limits as they did years ago.

This can make your blog complain about running out of memory or you get an internal server error when someone tries to leave a comment on your site.

The good news is, I’ve added some code to this version to automatically try and up your memory limit for PHP processes to 128M and I’ve also modified the code so that any ajax requests try to only load the things that are used for fetching feeds and info panels which should help a lot with shared hosting accounts that have blogs with lots of plugins!

Kill the (clever) spammers!

new-commentluv-antispam

There was already an option to hide or discard a comment that had a last blog post link but no author URL in the last version.

That was there to scupper the efforts of clever spammers who would put a dodgy URL in the comment form, get the last blog post link and then delete the URL so they could get around Akismet who would instantly recognize the dodgy URL.

Now, spammers have realized this and have started getting the link from their dodgy site and then putting in a fake or innocent URL like google.com or yahoo.com in the form and clicking submit. The get a deep direct link to their crappy site and you might not notice because the URL looks innocent.

No more!

You can now set CommentLuv to only accept comments that have a last blog post link that matches the URL of the site. (only for comments that have a last blog post link)

This will make a lot of bloggers happy! They’ve been screaming at me for this for ages!

More efficiency added at no extra charge!

There are a few other behind-the-scenes things added to this version that I hope will improve the user experience and help you attract even more visitors to your blog!

Get listed on the search engine

There are only 5000 places on the Global CommentLuv enabled site search engine and they are ordered by the blogs that receive the most comments so if you want to be found, get some comments!

I had some requests for a good comment strategy for new blogs that install CommentLuv so I’ll see about making some free content videos on how exactly to get a new blog on the radar. It’s a pretty simple set of steps but so many new bloggers miss out on doing them, the videos I will make should make it super easy for you to adopt this strategy to get yourself noticed.

[edit] I had to issue a very minor update due to the ajax subscribe button not working properly. all fixed in 2.91.1
