New fancy feature for commentluvvers!

Posted by Andy Bailey at 29 September, 2008, 10:01 pm

I am trialling a new plugin that adds a cool new feature to the last blog posts that are left by the current CommentLuv plugin.

Hover your mouse over the red heart next to the link and you can see a popup showing the users Gravatar and description from their CommentLuv.com account.

Non-members get the amount of times the link has been clicked shown.

Use the profile link in the toolbar and enter a few lines about yourself in the description box and make sure the email you used to register here is registered with your Gravatar account and start inticing people with your last posts, where you posted and how many times your link was clicked.

Hand’s up all those have heard of the Wheel Of Fortune? That many huh? Well that is nothing compared to Andy’s brand new Wheel Of The Featured Site! This latest masterpieces was born out of necessity as he wanted to concentrate on his wonderful plugins and needed something that would troll the net and pick the most worthy blog  to add to his weekly “Featured Site.”

The Wheel Of The Featured Site was a pure stroke of genius and it would be bloody marvelous if we could see all the flashing lights and the whirring of gears as he pushes the button every week. The problem is that it’s completely silent and goes about it’s job very unobtrusively. I suppose he planned it that way so as not to interrupt his creative genius.

Anyway, it didn’t take long for the wheel to pick this week’s lucky featured site, and it’s none other than PsychicGeek.

I found this blog to be rather unique as the blogger signs every post with Warmly WitchyPoo, and it’s an actual signature too! She brings many characters into her blog, including Ass Burger Boy and Warrior Woman that I first met at her Pajama Party. The comments were running thick and fast on this particular post including a cheeky one from yours truly.

I really wanted to see how this PsychicBabe interacted with her commentators but although I searched high and low I could not find a post where she replied to comments from her readers.  I thought that her Gimme Gemini post, where she talks about a job interview and the roots of hell, was sure to solicit a response from Witchypoo, but no such luck. I know that there has to be a method in her madness, perhaps it’s to feed the mystery aspect of being PshchicGeek, and if that’s it, well it’s working well with this Aussie.

It seems that she has been a little anxious of late and it’s all to do with some wanker and an obnoxious phone call. Well, WitchyPoo, I like the  rest of your commentators wish you get back into blogging mode real soon because if you were to stop you would leave a void in the Blogosphere.

Featured CommentLuv Site: Imnotbeautifullikeyou.com

There are many bloggers that have found what a great plugin CommentLuv truly is, and how Andy does his utmost to help those who are having difficulties with it. The thing is that Andy can’t seem to sit still and so he takes the CommenLuv plugin one step further and expands the features into the new AjaxCommentLuv. Upon registration at commentluv.com we as bloggers can now select from our last ten posts as to which comment will be tagged at the end of our comment.

Andy still isn’t satisfied and he wants to reward those readers who become CommentLuvvers by having a weekly ‘Featured Site’. It seems only fitting that this weeks site goes to Tata’s I’m Beautiful Like Me and not just because she was the first one to take the plunge by trialling the Beta version of the new plugin. She also proudly displays the ‘CommenLuv’ badge, something that I need to rectify, sorry Andy I will get right on it.

As for Tata’s blog, it didn’t take long to come to the conclusion that this woman obviously enjoys what she does. You can tell from her posts that she puts a lot of thought, effort and love into them. You can always tell when someone does something they love as the finished product virtually leaps at you, each word forcing you to read the next to the culmination of the post.

Even the pink font, from a bloke’s point of view, didn’t detract from the blogs appearance, I was actually amazed how well the pink went with the black theme, that’s one combination I wouldn’t of thought of. Introducing was one of my favourite post as it introduced her extended family and I have always found it interesting when a blogger reveals something of their personal life.

Her blog shows that you don’t have to write about ways of making money etc., like a lot of other blogs out there, to gain a readership. You also get the impression that her commentators like the CommentLuv idea, as they get rewarded for taking the time to leave a comment. Tata, good job on your blog and congratulations on becoming the first of Andy’s featured sites.

V2.0b Release 11

A new release is out, happily not because of bug fixes but more for feature compatibility and a fix for the apostrophe junkies. You can now use single apostrophes in the text of the output.
[name]’s last blog post [lastpost]

I’ve also changed the javascript slightly so an admin who has click tracking enabled will get their clicks on their commenters last blog posts counted and stored at the stats page. You’ll be surprised at how many times you click your commenters last blog post links!

A Portuguese language file is now included, I have no way of testing it so if you’re from Portugal and you run your wordpress blog in Portuguese, please let me know if you can see the translation in the commentluv settings page.

You can download the v11 beta release in the normal place or click here

CommentLuv link click tracking

Posted by Andy Bailey at 12 September, 2008, 1:25 am

I finished the code today that allows the plugin to track when your last blog post link gets clicked. This means registered members who have confirmed their site will see which of their last blog posts get the most attention on comments made on blogs with the new version plugin.

I’ve also added a field in the plugins’ settings page for a registered user to add their commentluv.com ID. This will allow the plugin to track which links get clicked on their own blog.

The stable beta release is just a couple of days away, I’ll work on it this weekend and hopefully have it ready for Monday.

New features discovered

The plugin has been updated even further and now has language support and a choice of graphic to use as the below comment badge. It was while I was doing this that I discovered I could monitor the last blog post links.. this means that a registered member who has commentluv installed will soon be able to see which of their links are getting clicks on the comments they make on commentluv blogs.

Now you’ll be able to see just what titles work best for advertising your blog posts!

There will be a new beta version out this weekend and that should be the last major change. While it’s out in the wild being put to work to see if there are any glitches, I will work on the backend of this site and put in all the goodies I’ve been promising like default post links and statistics of where you’ve commented and who’s commented on you.

Stay tuned for the latest news right here!

Feed urls as if by magic

Posted by Andy Bailey at 7 September, 2008, 10:41 pm

I spent over 14 hours coding today! Most of it was eaten up with learning the fineries of Jquery().each . In particular, how to step through each item in an XML response and use it to automatically populate the text fields. I actually spent 3 hours trying to figure out why it wouldn’t do it and in the end it was a pesky underscore missing from a variable.

The registration process has been updated, thanks to Byteful traveller you will now be able to choose your own password during registration.

The new settings page shows your feed location and allows you to specify a different one or reset back to the autofind one. Oh, you can also reset your site if you entered a wrong url.

I spent another few hours putting in validation and anti spam things to the site and code, by golly that is the most laborious thing to do with making new programs - preventing the id-10 T’s from crashing the server or site with malformed urls and the like.

I will be launching commentluv soon as an ajax plugin for Wordpress as soon as I pretty up the registration page and put in the new graphics kindly made by Byteful.

CommentLuv registrations open

I’ve just opened up the site for user registrations, it’s all a bit sparse in the dashboard at the moment but newly registered members can submit their site and once it’s confirmed by the user adding a small code number at their home page, they will be able to choose from their last 10 posts on blogs that use ACL.

There is a download page now, still no download link. I’ll need some beta testers for that to make sure it is working ok. It seems to be ok for me here and on FiddyP so hopefully there wont be any major delays for the proper release. Once that’s up and stable, I’ll see if I can get it working on a forum or Typepad. yey!

I’m still not utilizing the database for storing the last blog posts yet, last time I did that the database grew huge with over 100,000 comments processed per day!

If you have any comments, feel free to leave one here or at the support forum
